Officers and members from the Coast Guard Auxiliary District National Capital Region – Central Luzon (CGAD NCR-CL) earned the praise and approval of Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Ramon C Liwag PCG, as President Benigno Simeon Aquino III conducted a surprise visit at the Manila North Harbor for this year’s Holy Week observance and remarked on the officers’ vigilance and readiness.
The on-duty 125th Squadron who also served as the PCGA Task Force Lead Squadron, through the headship of Task Force Commander Capt Eliseo P Lim PCGA and Task Force Deputy Commander Capt Junmar A Roa PCGA received a thumbs-up from the Commandant while President Aquino remarked on their alertness and curative preparedness in a seaport packed full of seagoing public.
The event was televised in News Programs on Channels 5 and 11.
In preparation for the influx of passengers who are to travel in and out of cities and provinces, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in cooperation with the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and other related government offices & non-government organizations including the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA), have supported the pro-active approach to ensure that sea travel will be orderly, safe, convenient & secure.
As spearheaded by the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC)’s Eagle Eye Project Help Desk “Oplan Mahal na Araw 2011”, the Passenger Assistance Center (PAC) was put up in strategic locations on different ports and harbors within the areas of responsibility from April 15-26, 2011.
The presence of men in uniform not only provided security to the riding public, but also an assurance that there will be officers who can protect them from harm. The sense of safety, confidence and organized assistance were carried out as well as ensuring that there is enough manpower to help out arriving and departing passengers.
Crowd control management was one of the major roles PCGA took part: giving directions to first time sea travelers; ensure that senior citizens and those with children in queue be given priority; pacify irate passengers due to delayed schedule; assist in lost & found incidents; and refer firearm carrying passengers to sea marshals. First aid treatment were also rendered to some who fell ill due to extremely high temperature and inadequate ventilation. Elderlies were referred to the harbor’s physician on duty for further medical checkup.
One hundred fifty three (153) officers and members from eleven (11) Squadrons of CGAD NCR-CL untiringly supported the said event, while a total number of 31,234 sea-going passengers, 2,453 of which were arrival passengers, from South Harbor were assisted.
