With its commitment to support the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in its goal of maintaining safety of life and property at sea, members of the 125th Squadron takes hold of every opportunity to equip themselves in terms of emergency preparedness and skills.
LTSG Noemi Alvaran PCGA, LTSG Sheryl Roa PCGA and LTSG Arline Monteclaro PCGA, took the initiative to undergo a week long training last May with the Philippine Red Cross, Manila Chapter for Basic Life Support and Standard First Aid Training. This was highlighted with a Mass Casualty Management Simulation.
Consequently, more members of the Squadron and three others from the 103rd underwent Disaster Risk Management and Emergency Response Training as ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs’ Bayan Mo Ipatrol Mo, in partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), opened its doors for a free seminar and training for selected non-government units and youth groups last 27 May.
The unorthodox method of presentation by Dr. Ted Esguerra PCG, Flight Surgeon and OIC of the PCG Elite Medical/Technical Rescue Team, had every participant’s concentration and attention during the entire training.
The participants’ alertness were tested as plastic chairs and empty bottles of water flew unexpectedly from various directions at random periods throughout the training, as tossed by Dr. Esguerra. This could have hit anyone unprepared for an upcoming disaster.
His cardio pulmonary resuscitation technique was made very practical and simple that even the young participants were able to render the exercise to a dummy. First Aid and bandaging technique were also discussed and demonstrated by other members of his team, particularly by Ensign Katrina Ingal PCG. It was also highlighted by a simulation of Mass Casualty Disaster Management Simulation.
Dr. Esguerra’s passion to unconditionally save lives and uplift the name of our nation in a more positive manner inspired the participants to also commit themselves to an unselfish service to humanity. For him, providing a mouth to mouth contact to an unknown victim may even endanger the safety of the rescuer thus he encouraged a direct chest compression once a rescuer find the situation safe for both the unconscious victim and the rescuer.
The activity was covered via Live Telecast for ABS-CBN’s morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda” and the primetime evening news “TV Patrol”.
