Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Adm Wilfredo D Tamayo PCG, lauded the crowd of enlisted public and private citizens who graced the recent Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) 27th National Convention held in Baguio, City, for having the largest number of attendees ever recorded.
“I’m happy with the turn-out of the convention that we’ve had. We had the biggest number of attendees in the history of conventions of PCGA, more than 500auxiliarists plus 100 regular coast guards,” the admiral affirmed in an interview.
“We value our partnership with the PCGA. We realize that we cannot have effective presence without the assistance of the coast guard auxiliary because of our limited number of manpower due to limited capabilities. We also rely on volunteers like auxiliary members, I call them the country’s premier maritime volunteers,” disclosed Adm. Tamayo.
He furthered that the auxiliaries have the assets that can augment the coast guard like those who own ships and even small boats or motor bancas, aircrafts, radio stations, maritime schools, maritime training institutions and those who have the profession that can benefit the service such as those from the medical and engineering industry. There are also those who have the skills and talents in diving, swimming and other life saving capabilities.
“We value partnerships so much. We have a lot of high spirited individuals who have the capabilities for humanitarian assistance, who have the talent to support the Philippine Coast Guard. Some are amazed with the modest resources we are able to cope with the demands of the maritime community, but again we also realize that in reality, the resources of the PCG is not enough to cover a country which has among the longest coastlines in the world. We have more than 7,000islands to guard, numerous waterways, and big bodies of water around our country and in the crossroads of trade and commerce. So we have invited lots of volunteers to join the PCG. The PCGA is thus a time-honored organization that has been supporting us ever since,” he expounded.
Likewise, Vice Admiral Higinio C. Mendoza Jr., PCGA National Director, praised the auxiliary volunteers in helping promote safety of life at sea and helping out in the protection of marine environment. He also expressed PCGA’s aim to increase and enlist more personnel so as to strengthen the service’s manpower.
“We have finally been able to empower the districts through an agreement with the PCG, allowing District Directors to approve and issue G.O.'s (General Order)s to incoming members from the rank of Commander and below in cooperation and with the approval of their counterparts and partners - the PCG District Commanders. This is a positive step forward for our organization. This will now make it easier for new members to be inducted into the PCGA," he said. In his speech, Commodore Pablo Ortega PCGA and Commodore Joseph Dy PCGA, hosts of the convention, had nothing but praises for the auxiliarists: "We have some of the nation’s finest both in public and private sectors to join the PCGA ranks,” says Commo. Ortega.
“The number of participants is record breaking. (This organization) may not be perfect but how we bond together makes it different,” says Commo. Dy.
Meanwhile, Transportation and Communications Undersecretary for Maritime Affairs Aristotle Batuhan who graced the special affair urged the delegates to strengthen the partnership between the PCG and the PCGA as it exemplifies President Benigno C. AquinoIII’s advocacy of private and public partnership in governance.
“This conference is timely and important (especially in tackling) climate change. This will allow us to carry out missions on how to help the PCG and PCGA in conducting safety of life at sea,” says USec. Batuhan.
Moreover, the PCG Commandant reiterated his appreciation and said “let me personally thank the PCGA members for their great contribution to the cause of the PCG and for excellent out team work and great service to our country,” he ended.
