DAVAO CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) seeks to further strengthen ties with the country’s maritime law enforcement agency during their 29th Annual Convention held in Davao City.
Being the uniformed civilian support group of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the PCGA is one of the largest non-government organizations in the country that aims for risk reduction especially on the unusual global warming phenomenon caused by climate change. Also, among its many duties is assisting the PCG in promoting safety of life and properties at sea.
Coast Guard Commandant Rear Admiral Rodolfo Isorena said that the entire PCG are in full support of the activity to show the Coast Guard’s appreciation of the Auxiliary’s commitment in working with the PCG in various search and rescue, marine environmental protection and civic action undertakings.
The National Convention is a yearly gathering of Coast Guard Auxiliaries from all over the country. It serves as a yearly forum for the Auxiliary members to review the previous year’s performance and further develop strategies aimed at helping the PCG accomplish its mission in promoting safety of life and property at sea and protecting the marine environment.
The event also provides participants the opportunity to meet fellow PCGA members from other districts and forge stronger ties in the spirit of volunteerism.
Rear Admiral Cecil Chen, Commander of Coast Guard District National Capital Region-Central Luzon (CGDNCR-CL), who represented the Commandant as the keynote speaker for the opening day of the said event at the Grand Meng Seng Hotel in Davao City, lauded the delegates for their commitment to serve as a volunteer force to help the PCG in promoting safety at sea, protecting the marine environment and at times risking their lives in the conduct of search and rescue and disaster response operations with Coast Guard personnel or by themselves in remote areas where PCG rescue personnel can hardly reach from their detachments.
At present, there are more or less 10,000 active PCGA members around the country. Most of the members have assets such as vessels and aircraft and/or professions that are useful to the PCG in meeting its mission requirements as a multi-mission maritime agency.
Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Luis Tuason Jr. Coast Guard Vice Commandant for Operations also was set as the guest speaker for the convention’s Commandant’s Night at the Water Front Hotel in behalf of RADM Isorena.
